Mabel Charline Carpenter, 85, of Corsicana, passed away Friday, April 18, 2014, in Denton, Texas, with her son by her side. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, April 25, 2014, at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tom Connolly officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana.

Mabel was born in Fairplay Township, Arkansas, to the late Huey Latelle and Ruby Andrews Barber. Not long after Mabel was born, her mother was diagnosed with cancer which she succumbed to just before Mabel’s second birthday. Soon after, her father left for Missouri to seek employment and Mabel was left in the care of two maternal great-aunts who ran a boarding house and worked for the telephone company in Prescott, Arkansas.

After high school graduation, Mabel remained in Prescott, working as a telephone operator and was very active at the First United Methodist Church. The organist at the church set Mabel up on a blind date with the new Chamber of Commerce Executive who had recently relocated from Texas, Rex Carpenter. After steady dating, the couple married on July 28, 1951, and moved to Mexia, Texas, where they welcomed the birth of their only child, Chuck, in 1952. Rex’s career as a Chamber of Commerce professional gave them the opportunity to work and live in other Texas towns after Mexia. . .Ennis, Waxahachie, Henderson, and finally in 1966, Corsicana.

Mabel graduated from Henderson Business College and worked as a secretary/receptionist for several years, but the position she held most dear was “Household Executive.” She was proud to call herself Mrs. Rex Carpenter, supported her son in his ambitions, committed herself to numerous community activities and served the United Methodist Church. She was a talented seamstress and created much of her wardrobe. Years later after the birth of her granddaughter, Laura, she crafted dresses and costumes for her as well. In 2011, Rex passed away and soon thereafter, Mabel moved to Denton, Texas, to be near her son.

Mabel is survived by her son, Chuck Carpenter and wife, Kathy, of Denton; granddaughter, Laura, of Austin; as well as many friends. H15
