The son of Major Daniel and Sarah McLaughlin Washabaugh, he graduated from Lafayette College in 1864. He surveyed the Black Hills in Dakota, and became a lawyer. He was one of the pioneers of Deadwood, South Dakota, and was elected to the state senate 5 times. He was the attorney for the Homestead Mine. In 1885 he was elected Judge in Lawrence Co. SD, and the circuit judge for the 8th judical district. He became ill and died at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, MD. Survived by wife, brother Col. P. M. Washabaugh, and sisters, Annie Hartley, Mrs. Barndollar, Mrs. Wentz, Mrs. Crane, Mrs. Douglass, Mrs. Shannon. Wife Lilla Edwards, the only daughter of Gov.
