Robert James Carty, Sr. 84, of Suisun Valley passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Easter Sunday. Born July 26, 1929 in Hollywood CA to Mary L. Toombs and Henry J. Carty. He was a graduate of University of California at Los Angeles, earning a degree in marketing. There he met his wife Jean Harris whom he married in 1952. After serving in the Navy in San Diego and building apartments with his brother in Hollywood, they came to Suisun Valley in 1963 and purchased the Bella Vista Ranch, which, at the time, was older apricot, peach, pear and prune orchards. He was one of the first farmers to plant wine grapes in the Suisun Valley. This is where they raised their family. One of his favorite chores was tractoring in the vineyard where he enjoyed being outdoors.
He served in US Navy, 1952-1955 during the Korean Conflict. Bob was an active member and held offices in the following organizations: Suisun Valley Fruit Growers, Farm Bureau and the Allied Grape Growers. He was charter member and served as Chairman of the Board of Suisun Valley Bank.
Bob had a wide variety of interests and collections including antique machinery, antique cars and firearms and he enjoyed studying the history of each. He thoroughly enjoyed California history through collecting artifacts, such as arrowheads and Indian baskets, traveling to small foothill towns where he met and talked to interesting people. As he came from gold miner families on his mother's side, he particularly delighted in gold country stories centering in Placerville. His own mother remembered Native Americans following her to school.
Bob will be greatly missed by his children and their families, sons: Thomas (Kim), Kenneth (Coralie), Robert Jr., daughters; Janet Clark (Michael), Jane Klotz (Donald), 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. The family thanks Pat Genaw, his Home Care Provider and the staff at North Bay Medical Center for their excellent care. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Jean in 2011.
Funeral services will be held April 25th, Friday at 12 Noon at Rockville Cemetery Stone Chapel, 4219 Suisun Valley Rd.
