Obituary:
"Our loving Mother passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, Sept 8th. Bertha Marie was born in Byrndale, PA to Peter and Stefina Morris. While a young child the family moved to Erie, PA, there she met and married Richard Slagter in 1950. As a young married mother she hosted many parties and family gatherings. She enjoyed bowling on a league, trips to Niagara Falls and to the Grand Ol Opry. In 1962, she relocated to Tempe, AZ where she was employed by Motorola, working with high-tech parts for NASA. In 1966 she married George Riggs. While visiting family in Oregon, they decided to move up to this beautiful State, so in 1978 they moved to Stayton. While in Stayton, she enjoyed her job as a nutritionist for the OSU Extension Service. Eventually, she moved to Salem where she worked at Siltec until her retirement in 1987.
Bertha was a deeply devoted mother and a lively, positive force in her children's lives. She was always ready to listen or share good advice. Full of life, she loved to laugh and tease. Our mother was an artist, a poet, a storyteller and chef extraordinaire. She loved conversation, cooking, reading, politics and trips to Reno.
Bertha leaves behind sons Richard Slagter (Tammy), James Slagter (Jeannie), George Riggs (Kristina), Jody Riggs, and daughter Susan Schneider (Pat), ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Huun for the many years of attentive care he and his staff provided and Willamette Valley Hospice for their kind and generous support.
There will be a Memorial Mass at St Vincent De Paul Church in Salem on Friday, Sept 20th at 6:00 PM.
