Survivors include his wife, Lena; his sons, Max S. Johnson and Dewey Johnson Jr.; two brothers; and five grandchildren.
He served as a major in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a World War II veteran. He served in New Mexico House of Representatives and as a football and basketball coach. He had lived in Roswell 46 years.
