Emmitt was born in Florida, afflicted with ichthyosis. The condition made his skin hard and scaly; only his face and hands were smooth. He fell in love with a young girl by the name of Percilla, who worked for the Lauther as the " Monkey Girl." They fell in love and were married in 1938. Percilla later gave birth to a baby girl, who died of pneumonia shortly thereafter. They later adopted a son Tony. The Bejanos eventually ran their own show and exhibited themselves as the "World's Strangest Married Couple." They were married for 57 years. Emmitt died on May 14, 1995. Percilla on February 5, 2001
