Percilla was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with hypertrichosis, a condition that causes excessive hairiness all over the face and body. This gave her a full black beard even as a baby. Knowing she could be exhibited for profit her parents brought her to the U.S. They met Karl Lauther, who fell in love with the infant and adopted her. She grew up in the sideshow. But when she was twenty she met Emmitt Bejano, who worked for the Lauther as the "Alligator-Skinned Man. They fell in love and were married in 1938. Percilla later gave birth to a baby girl, who died of pneumonia shortly thereafter. They later adopted a son Tony. The Bejanos eventually ran their own show and exhibited themselves as the "World's Strangest Married Couple." They were married for 57 years. Emmitt died on May 14, 1995. Percilla on February 5, 2001
