President, Wilberforce University, 1956-1976. Was elected to the Bishopric of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1976. Held AME Church pastorates in Jamestown, RI, Cambridge, MA and Canton, OH. Also served as the Dean of the Payne Theological Seminary. Was also a member of the Board of Directors of the United Negro College Fund and a wide variety of other cultural and civic organizations. The Stokes Learning Resource Center at Wilberforce University is named in his honor.
