Virgil enlisted in Macon County NC on March 11, 1863 into the 62nd NC Infantry Company "D" and sent to Cumberland Gap Tennessee. Captured there on September 9, 1863 he was sent to Louisville KY, then on to Camp Douglas POW camp in Chicago Illinois where he arrived on September 26, 1863. After 326 days as a prisoner of war Virgil died of "smallpox" on August 18, 1864. Virgil Darnell is buried under the name "Virgil Darnel" in the Confederate Mound of Oak Woods Cemetary in Chicago Ill. His name can be found on plaque #4 on the base of the confederate monunent.
