Carole Jean Murphy, 62, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, died in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Dec. 11, 2005, as the result of a household accident.

She was born Oct. 10, 1943, in Doland, S.D., the third of six children born to Deschler and Febiola Remily Welch.

She excelled in the Doland school system and achieved high honors at the University of South Dakota where she majored in accounting. She was honored as the Business School's "alumnus of the year" in 1992.

College was also where Carole met her future husband Joseph Jerome Murphy. The two married June 19, 1965, and worked together marketing insurance for architectural and engineering professionals until they retired to Cody in October 1998.

They found a personal paradise in Cody and rejoiced in each other's company until Mr. Murphy's untimely death in March 1999.

An avid hobbyist and member of the Catholic Church, she is remembered as one who would try any craft project and give it her all. She kept exploring craft opportunities and at any given time was taken with quilting, machine embroidery, painting, stamping, scrap-booking and other crafts.

Her dedication to an active retirement was most impressive in the way she overcame the handicap of surviving a serious car accident and left arm amputation in spring 2001.

She is survived by her son Joseph (Kate) and grandchildren Simon and Clara of Glenwood, Iowa, and grandson Brendan of Atlanta, Ga., daughter Mary (Rod) and grandchildren Rodney, Brenna and Molly of Sioux Falls, siblings John Welch of South Port, Conn., Barry Welch of Willmar, Minn., Mary Jane Avery of Rapid City, S.D., Beverly Welch of Rapid City, and their spouses, children and grandchildren.

A funeral service was last week at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery on Monday.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Sioux Falls.
