Esther H. Neuhaus, age 90, of 17412 County Line Road, Elkhart Lake, died in the arms of her daughter at her daughter's home on Saturday May 28, 2011.

She was born May 25, 1921 in rural Elkhart Lake, a daughter of the late Harry and Elsie (Kraemer) Toepel.

She attended Neith School in the town of Russell.

On May 29, 1943, Esther was united in marriage to Armin Neuhaus at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiel. He preceded her in death on March 17, 1982.

Together, Esther and Armin farmed in the town of Schlewsig.

Esther was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ in Ada. Esther was a kind and generous person, and always had a gentle smile and a little "treat" for those who might visit her at her son's salvage yard. She treasured her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was a special "Grandma" to them all. Esther was an avid gardener, and maintained a large garden until the last few years. She had a special place in her heart for animals, especially her cats.

Surviving Esther is a daughter, Arleen (Tim) Gruenke of the town of Mosel; two sons, Karl and Donald (Bonnie) Neuhaus, town of Schleswig; two grandsons, Glen (Sandy) and Robert (Tammy) Hammerschmidt; three granddaughters, Michelle (Kevin) Sixel, Dawn (Eric) Muehlbauer and Kristine (Aaron) Luebke; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Marie (Charles) Schwinn, Virginia Neuhaus and Irene Neuhaus; a brother-in-law, Harold (Dorothy) Neuhaus.

In addition to her parents and husband, Esther was also preceded in death by an infant son, a sister, Margaret Mauk and her brother-in-law, Milton Mauk; three brothers-in-law, Roland, Arno and Elmer Neuhaus; her sister and brother-in-law, Helen (Reinhardt) Ulrich, and her in-laws, Albert and Alma Neuhaus.

A Funeral Service will be held for Esther on Wednesday June 1, 2011 at Bethel United Church of Christ in Ada. Reverend Jim Liddle will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
