HEART ATTACK IN DEL RIO, TEX. IS FATAL TO CLARENCE BBONNELL, 74, VETERAN TEACHER AT HTHS
Assistant Principal, Science Dep’t Head Was Enroute Home from Rotary Convention at San Francisco, When Fatally Stricken
Death today ended Clarence Bonnell’s 43 years of continuous service on the Harrisburg Township high school faculty.
The 74-year old assistant principal and head of the Science department died at 2:30 a. m. in Del Rio, Tex., hundreds of miles from where he had spent the major portion of his life.
Word of his death was received at 10:30 a. m. at the home of Harry Taylor, former HTHS principal who was associated with Mr. Bonnell for more thn 40 years. The call was from Dr. Ellis Bonnell, his son. Dr. Bonnell started to the bedside of his father at Del Rio and learned of his death when he arrived at Dallas, Tex. The call was from Dallas.
Dies of Heart Attack
Dr. Bonnell said he had learned his father had died of a heart attack. He said he was going on to Del Rio, that his wife, who was with him, would come directly to Harrisburg. The body will be shipped here, he stated adding that he would call again later in the day. The body will be taken to the Harrisburg funeral home.
Mr. Bonnell, author of two books, “Little Journeys from Harrisburg” and “The Illinois Ozarks,” left Harrisburg June 7 by plane for San Francisco as a delegate to the Rotary convention there. He was returning home by train when stricken near Del Rio yesterday. He was taken to the M and S clinic there and friends here were informed of his grave condition by the Red Cross. The Red Cross here contacted his son, a psychiatrist in San Francisco, and he left immediately for the bedside of his father.
Son, Daughter Survive
Mr. Bonnell’s wife died three years ago. Besides the son, he is survived by a daughter, Mildred, who is with the UNRRA in China.
He came to the Harrisburg Township high school in the fall of 1904. Before he came here he taught three years in the rural schools of Christian county, was principal of the Metropolis high school for three years and principal of the Paxton high school for two years. His two children were born, reared and educated through high school here.
The 1945 Keystone, the Harrisburg high school year book, was dedicated to Mr. Bonnell. In it Mr. Taylor, then principal, said:
“Mr. Bonnell has been a most valuable member of our faculty. He is a most excellent teacher, thoroughly dependable, and can be relied upon to do the right thing at all times. He is a gentleman in all that the word implies.
Civic Leader
“Mr. Bonnell’s services have not been confined to the high school alone, but have also been given to the community in general. He has been a civic leader, taking an active part in the affairs of the community and has given willingly of his time and service to the various civic groups in their endeavor to make a better community.
“The history of the Harrisburg Township high school cannot be written with out emphasizing the services of Mr. Bonnell - services that will long be remembered and cherished by those who have come into contact with him.”
