Shirley Meade, 97, of Ottawa, died Thursday evening, April 17, at the Ottawa Pavilion. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, in the Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa with the Rev. Linda Deming, pastor of Evangelical United Methodist Church, Ottawa, officiating. Burial will be in Ottawa Avenue Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Shirley was born on April 30, 1916, in Ottawa to Fred and Mabel (Hindle) Schinz. She was employed at the LaSalle County Court House and the Farm Bureau, before retiring as a stenographer for the Illinois Department of Transportation in Ottawa. She married Max G. Meade on December 9, 1939 in Ottawa. Shirley was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church, Ottawa Women's Club, and served as a Camp Fire Leader. She was well known for her cooking and for the Mexican Cream candy she made for church activities.

She is survived by one daughter, Marsha (Dan) Monroe, of Ottawa, and one son, Thomas (Connie) Meade, of Bossier City, Lousiana; 8 grandchildren: Tina Strickland, Dawn Nelson, Michele Callaway, Michael Rooks, Jeff Meade, Jay Meade, Mindy Blaylock, and Lindsey Goodman, 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson, and one brother Robert Schinz, of Ottawa.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1973, 3 sisters, Elvera Bellrose, Dorothy Thomson, and Bernice Begley, and 2 brothers, Oliver and Albert Schinz.
