After graduating from West Seattle High School in Seattle, Washington, he went to Santa Clara University. During World War II he played with two service teams, the Second Air Force Superbombers in 1944, and the Fourth Air Force Fliers in 1945.
He was drafted in the 24th round of the NFL draft by the Chicago Bears, but opted to sign with the San Francisco 49ers in the All America Football Conference. He played nose guard for the 49ers from 1946 through 1952 before a serious knee injury ended his career.
