March 2nd at 12:29 a.m., Hal Tucker Blythe Sr., passed from this temporal world into eternity at the age of 85. While he is rejoicing in his reunion with his little brother, mom, and dad, he is badly missed.
Hal was born to Vernon and Velma Blythe of Greenbrier, Sept. 10, 1928.
He moved to Odessa, Texas, in 1949, after attending the University of Central Arkansas and was a science teacher and principal in Odessa, Texas, until 1966. In 1966, he pursued his doctorate of philosophy in education at East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas, as one of the first 50 such graduates. He moved his family to San Marcos, Texas, August 1968, and joined the Education Department of Southwest Texas State where he was recognized as an outstanding professor.
He and his wife, Iris Kennedy Blythe, spent later years supporting the Texas State University girls' volleyball and softball programs. Very much service-oriented, they were volunteers at Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos and worked together as volunteers with the San Marcos Visitors Center. As First United Methodist Church members, he supported the church's areas of service such as the Food Bank and was active with Methodist Men.
He is survived by his wife, Iris Kennedy Blythe; sister, Delilah Ann Davenport; two sons, Hal Tucker Blythe Jr. and Gary Thomas Blythe; daughter-in-law, Alicia Blythe; fiancée to Gary, Kimberly Doran; four grandchildren, Allison Lowry, Heather Ritt, Trenton Blythe, and Thomas Blythe; six great-grandchildren, Adelaide Lowry, Hudson Lowry, Levi Lowry, Ella Lowry, Avery Ritt, and Colton Ritt; a brother- and sister-in-law, Max and Loueva Burrows; and three nephews, Mark Davenport, Brian Burrows, and Gregory Burrows.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in San Marcos, with the Rev. Dr. Jenna Heart officiating.
