1942-2014
Karen Frances Ragland of Boise, ID, died Friday , April 4, 2014. Born May 22, 1942 in New Meadows, ID, to Angeline (Maestas) and Harry Hanson. She grew up in Boise and spent summers with her family in logging camps. Shortly after graduating from Borah High School, she married George Ragland on August 20, 1960. They lived in Boise until his death in 1994. Karen devoted her adult life to taking care of her family and friends. She also volunteered for the ARC and advocated for the rights of disabled children and adults. She loved to travel, visiting Alaska, Canada, and Mexico before advancing oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy made travel too difficult. Indomitable, she continued to live independently and care for her disabled daughter, Kelly, for many years despite advancing MD. She also found her muse-computers-and joined a lively online community. She used the internet to remain connected to family and friends, and to follow news and politics through the end of her days when mantle cell lymphoma ended her online activities. Karen and her family are grateful to her beloved caregivers at Spring Creek and Align Hospice.
Surviving family includes her sister Judy Rasmussen, and Karen and George's four children: Kelly, Shannon (Jay Jester), Casey, and Nathan. Also surviving are four adored grandchildren: Benjamin, Emily, Claire, and Samuel.
A celebration of life will be held at Edgewood Spring Creek at 10139 W. Overland Rd in Boise on Friday, April 25th, at 3:00 pm. Although Karen enjoyed plants and flowers, please support the hospice organization of your choosing in lieu of sending flowers.
