Jennie Mae Freeland Keller, of Lawrence, Indiana passed away December 16th with many loved ones at her side at the Keller family farm in Spencer, Indiana. She was 79. A native of Connersville, she was born January 30th, 1926 to Stanley and Augusta Freeland. A graduate of Shortridge High School, she was an accomplished cellist, and graduated at the top of her class. She attended the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, where she met and married her late husband, Billy Joe Keller, formerly of Ft. Worth, Texas. She is survived by their five children, Melissa S. Light, Claudia J. Keller, Robert T. Keller and Elizabeth A. Keller, all of Indianapolis, and William J.T. Keller Sr. of Spencer, In. Before her marriage, she worked as a commercial artist for William H. Block Company and L.S. Ayres in Indianapolis. Crowned "Miss World Peace" in 1945, she was featured in "Life Magazine" that same year. She served as office manager to the late Mayor of Lawrence, Morris Settles of the City of Lawrence. Mrs. Keller also clerked in the Lawrence Small Claims Court. Before her retirement, she served as office manager for neurosurgeon, Doctor Theodore Luros, in his Indianapolis office. A tireless volunteer, Mrs. Keller devoted time on behalf of the March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. She also served on the Campaign Committee of Fifth District Congressman Dan Burton, who entered remarks into the Congressional Record in her honor on the date of her passing. Jennie always gave of herself to anyone, or any good cause in need. Mrs. Keller was a lifelong advocate of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine and Nutritional and Naturopathic Supplementation, and was a well-known and knowledgeable advocate in Central Indiana. A former Vice-precinct Committeewoman in Lawrence, Mrs. Keller is survived by her brother, Mervin "Pic" Freeland of Oaklandon, and her sisters, Lorraine Russell of West Palm Beach, Florida, Doris M. Freeland of Lawrence, Indiana and Joyce Smith of Wichita, Kansas. In addition to her children, she leaves behind 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held in Spencer, Indiana at the Keller family farm on January 30th, 2006, in celebration of her life and accomplishments. Her remains will be interred along with those of her husbands at the Keller Family memorial located on MoonShadow Ranch in Spencer.
