Son of John Wesley Jacobs and Meriah Tope

John Jacobs is dead.

The aging man was found unconscious in North 12th Street near an old Ozburn-Wright lumber shed one night nearly two weeks ago, his head bashed. Jacobs, a South 16th Street merchant, was removed to St. Andrew's hospital, later to be released. He returned to his home. Later his condition became alarming. He died at 2 o'clock this morning. A group of local doctors treated him. The man's relatives claim the attack in North 12th Street caused his death. Doctors may or may not disagree. The attack followed an alleged period if [sic] disipation. The morning after the attack it was said that a traveling salesman, a roomer in the Love home in North 12th Street, overheard two men quarreling just prior to the hour when Jacobs was found.

John Wesley Jacobs son of John W. and Mariah Jacobs not deceased, pioneer citizens of Jackson county, was born Sept. 30th, 1866, in Jackson county near Mt. Carbon.

He spent all of his life in Jackson county, where he was born, with the exception of three years which he lived in Creal Springs, Ill. In the year of 1892 on Nov. 6, he united in holy wedlock to Ella E. Staten of Creal Springs, Ill. Mrs. Jacobs, now deceased, departed this life in this city on Jan. 6, 1920.

To this union were born six children of whom all survive, namely: Elva M. Wayman of this city; Howard Jacobs of Peoria; Herman Jacobs, Mabel G. Ranellio, Hazel B. Baker, all of Detroit; Harold Jacobs of this city.

At an early age he was converted and joined the United Brethren church later joining the Centenary Methodist of Murphysboro. He has been engaged in the grocery business at 421 S. 15th street for the past several years.

In the year of 1930, July 3rd, he was united in marriage to Harriett Duffield at Wickliffe, Ky, of whom survives.

Mr. Jacobs departed this life Saturday morning Dec. 2nd, 1932 at 421 S. 15th street of this city. At the time of his death he was 67 years, 2 months and 2 days old.

He was a good husband, a kind and loving father and brother, always ready and willing to help his fellowman in time of need.

Besides his immediate family and a host of friends he leaves to mourn his departure the following brothers and sisters: C. B. Jacobs of this city, Mrs. Jane Gray of Herrin, Ill., L. E. Jacobs of Dixon, Ill., Alonzo Jacobs of this city, George Jacobs of Harrisburg, Lydia O'Banion of Los Angeles, Cal. He also leaves 12 grandchildren.
