Roman Catholic Archbishop. Fitero born José María García Lahiguera entered seminary in Tudela at the early age of ten and was ordained priest in Madrid on May 29, 1926. Graduating in canon law from the Pontifical University of Toledo, he was soon assigned to the teaching faculty of the seminary of Madrid. Named vicar general for the republican zone of the diocese by Msgr. Leopoldo Eijo Garay at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, at the end of the conflicts, he was assigned anew to the archdiocesan seminary this time as spiritual director. During the bloody period of the Civil War, he founded along with María del Carmen Hidalgo de Caviedes, the Congregación de Hermanas Oblatas de Cristo Sacerdote, a female religious congregation for the sanctification of the priests and the Church. Elected auxiliary for the then diocese of Madrid by Pope Pius XII, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Zela on October 29, 1950 from the named Archbishop Eijo y Garay. Named bishop of the diocese of Huelva in 1964, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of Valencia on July 1, 1969, succeeding Msgr. Marcelino Olaechea Loizaga SDB., whose cause for beatification is currently in process. Suffering a cerebral thrombosis in 1974, he retired from office four years later, moving to the archdiocese of Madrid-Alcala, where he spent his remaining years at the motherhouse of his congregation, often giving lectures and retreats. It was there that upon his death he was laid to rest. With his cause for beatification opened in 1995 by Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela, shortly after his appointment to the archbishopric of Madrid, Pope Benedict XVI declared him venerable on June 27, 2011.
