James Arthur "Art" Boulware

Mr. Boulware, 90, died Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Asbury Care Center in Charlotte, NC. Art was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and active member of his church. Art never met a stranger and during his short stay at Aldersgate, made many new friends.

Art was born August 5, 1923 in Newburg, MO, son of the late Walter Guy and Jessie Dee Brown Boulware. Mr. Boulware attended the University of Missouri in the 1940s and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He worked his way through school as a YMCA camp counselor and by playing trombone in several dance bands. Art later graduated from St. Louis University. Art worked for Corn Products for 38 years in St. Louis, Chicago, New York, Buffalo, Philadelphia, Englewood Cliffs NJ and finally to Winston-Salem, where he retired in 1985. It was in Buffalo where he met Patricia (Pat) who he married in 1964 and remained so until her death last year. During those 49 years of marriage, Art and Pat were almost never apart. Art was active with The Boy Scouts of America and enjoyed golf, gardening, and watching the Panthers, Bobcats and Braves. He was an elder of Pfafftown Christian Church where he sang in the choir and played hand bells. Over the last 4 years, Art was one of 1600 participants in a nationwide aging study conducted by eight national medical schools, locally through Wake Forest Bowman Gray School of Medicine and sponsored by the National Institute on Aging.

In addition to his parents and wife, Art was preceded in death by his brothers, Walter, Ronald, Everett and Bernie Boulware; sisters, Gweneth Reed and Mary Ellen Cutter.

Survivors include his son, Scott Boulware and Scott's wife, Elizabeth; granddaughters, Camille and Marin Boulware all of Charlotte, NC; sister, Doris (Clifford) Rudd of St. Louis, MO , Brother and Sister in law Jack and Sylvia Grucza and many nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 19, 2014, in the Terry Chapel at Dilworth United Methodist Church. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.
