Shawn, Our Brother. . .

Shawn passed away unexpectedly and suddenly sometime during the weekend of March 28, 2014. His body was discovered in his home on Sunday morning, March 30, 2014.

Based on what was found that morning and our definitive knowledge of Shawn's usual weekend activities, we, his family, believe he slipped away from us on Friday evening, March 28. We are certain that he was no longer with us at any time on March 30.

The youngest of four children--all of them being sons, he was born to Lewis Alexander and Patricia Persinger Wright.

His mother and his eldest brother, Gary Wayne, preceded Shawn in death. He is survived by his father, brother and sister-in-law Dean and Rebecca, also of Huddleston, and his brother, Brian, of Massachusetts. He is also survived by a very special family member, Suzanne M. Wright, as well as several other caring relatives.

Shawn attended Charleston's Taft Elementary School through the sixth grade, and was active in both the Cub Scouts and Boy Scout Troop 71 at his church, Wesley United Methodist. Although he had to leave his Charleston Troop behind, with the long distance guidance of his Scoutmasters, Shawn continued working toward his goal of achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

Shawn was outgoing, genuinely open and friendly, generous to a fault, and was always ready for fun.

When he was thirteen years old, his parents moved to their farm in Bedford County, Virginia. By this time, Shawn was the only child at home. He helped his father work the farm and establish a modest herd of cattle to increase its productivity, and he enjoyed the companionship of his horses and dogs.

He chose his Eagle Scout civic project with an eye to benefit Palestine Church, in Huddleston, which he and his parents attended.

Shawn was popular with his classmates at Bedford County's Staunton River Middle and High Schools, playing on the football and wrestling teams. Tall, athletic, and handsome, built like a pillar of rock, and with a warm and engaging personality, as a senior, he was elected president of the Class of 1985.

After graduation, he enrolled in college, but decided he wanted to join the job force for a while prior to continuing his studies there. He worked for two companies during the next few years, and was considered to be an excellent employee at both.

Always filled with energy and a zest for new experiences, Shawn, in addition to his full-time employment, joined the staff at nearby Smith Mountain Lake State Park, working several hours a week. He loved boating and bought his own outboard motor boat. Together with family and friends, he spent many happy hours cruising the lake.

Shawn was eager to contribute to their rural community, so he joined the local Huddleston Volunteer Rescue Squad and completed the required EMT training with them.

During those classes and the subsequent emergencies he attended, he discovered he had a liking and a knack for providing healthcare as a first responder. Considering the possibility of a career in trauma, critical transport, and first-response nursing, he decided to enlist in the United States Army, volunteering as a medic.

Shawn completed boot camp at Fort Bliss, near El Paso, Texas, in September, 1989, after which he was assigned to Fort Stewart, near Savannah, Georgia, where he received his medic training.
As Fort Stewart was the base that supplied troops to the Middle East, Shawn was deployed to Iraq during Desert Storm, and, as a medic, served on the front lines. He later shared bits of that wrenching experience with his family. It was evident that those difficult encounters deeply affected his caring and gentle nature.

After his military service, still with an eye on healthcare, but enjoying gardening, he studied landscaping. Shawn was a member of the Veterans Administration landscaping team that prepared the gardens at the National D-Day Memorial in the town of Bedford, Virginia.

His interest in landscape artistry grew, and he decided to make that an income-producing hobby. He became the owner and operator of Serenity Solutions Landscaping, providing lawn care for a growing number of homes and businesses in and around Lynchburg, VA. As in everything, he gave his new business his all, working indefatigably nearly all the time.

He met his beloved wife, Marcella, and they had a happy, but short life together, ending with her sudden death in December, 2013. He was broken-hearted over losing her, yet he trusted in God for strength to carry on.

He left his testimony that Christ was his salvation and his hope.

We loved him, and we miss him. He was too young to die. We, his family: father, brothers, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncle, and cousins say to him, "Rest in peace, at last, dear Shawn, until we meet again. We will always love and miss you. . ."
