Lucy Jane was born in Phelps, New York, the daughter of William Moore and Lucy Rice. Her family migrated to Washtenaw, Michigan in 1831. On August 6, 1850, she became the second wife of John Sedgwick Jenness, a prominent Detroit merchant, when they married in Detroit, Michigan. They moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan, around 1860.
They had five children together before she passed away in 1863. Their children were:
Henry Leland Jenness (1851-1920)
Flora Moore Jenness Matthews (1853-1938)
Emma Sedgwick Jenness Parmalee (1856-1914)
Jennie Holmes Jenness (1859-1859)
Lucy Rice Jenness Sayles (1859-1944)

She was 37 years old when she died.
