Martha Jane Peck, 111, of Durand, died Thursday March 31, 1994 at Oakview Care Center, Durand. She was born May 14, 1882 in Modena, Modena Township, Buffalo County, a daughter of; Ephraim and Elizabeth White Butler. She attended Modena Grade School, Mondovi High School and then Alma High School, where she graduated when she was sixteen years old. After graduation, she moved to Minneapolis where she worked as a third grade teachers aide and taught music classes. She studied voice and piano, soloed in church choirs, taught and directed choirs at Pillsbury Academy.
She sang professionally at the Lyric Theater and during the years of 1912-1914, was soloist with the Men's University Glee Club on their Chautauqua tours throughout Minnesota. Also during this time, she soloed at the Parkway Theater in Chicago. Martha continued her studies in New York City with Oscar Saenger. She was offered a contract with Aborne Opera Company, which she declined, deciding instead to return to Wisconsin.
May 9, 1914, she married Dr. Guy Stanley Peck, in Pilgrim Congregational Church in Durand. They lived all their married life in Durand. Guy died December 1, 1930. Martha continued to teach piano and voice until she was 102 years old; often three generations of the same family. She directed choir at both the Congregational and Methodist Churches. She sang at weddings, funerals and public functions.
-In 1975 she received the Durand Music Parents Award for Contribution to Music.
-In 1981 she received Wisconsin Music Award for outstanding service to Community Music and Music education.
-In 1984 she received the Lions Club Award for community service.
Martha was a former member of Durand School Board, member of the Order of Eastern Star, belonged to Child Interest Club and was a member of Durand Womans Club.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law; Sarah "Peggy" and Charles Garnhart of Shell Lake, a son and daughter-in-law: George "Bill" and Victoria Peck of Alexandria, Virginia, a daughter; Patricia Perry of Columbia, South Carolina, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one sister; Orvilla Peterson of Spokane, Washington.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents: Ephraim and Elizabeth White Butler, her husband: Guy Peck, one son-in-law; Eugene Perry, one grandson; Guy Peck, five brothers; Chester, William, Richard, Roscoe and Clayton Butler and three sisters; Ester Caldwell, Florence Bruton and Blanch Ryan.
Funeral services were held Monday April 4, 1994 at United Methodist Church in Durand. Pastors R. Ray Anderson and Clint Meharry. Casketbearers were; Rodney Berger, Byron Dale, Richard Lierman, George Parker, Donald Sankey and Jack Weishapple. Burial Was in Forest Hill Cemetery, Durand. Arrangements by Goodrich Funeral Home, Durand.
