Born in Smith County, Tennessee the son of William Henderson and Martha Cheek Palmer. He married Paulina (Perlina) Johnson Evans on December 24, 1854 in Putnam County, Tennessee. They had, it is thought, 12 children including Spencer, Levenia, Gion, Luther and William . Sometime in 1870 or 1871 they moved to Sumner County, Tennessee. He gave land for the Palmer's Chapel School and Palmer Cemetery. His wife was the first to be buried there in 1891.
