Vernon was inducted into the United States Army on November 13, 1944 and discharged on August 23, 1946. He was stationed in Germany, under the direction of General Patton in the 3rd Army.

Vernon A. Bowman of Emporia, formerly of Garnett, died Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Stormont Vail in Topeka. He was 90.
Mr. Bowman served from 1944 to 1946 in the United States Army, stationed in Germany under the direction of General Patton in the 3rd Army. He was a farmer, then managed several Sinclair Service Stations, including the one in Emporia. Before retirement he worked at Dillon's grocery.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett, which has the arrangements. Burial is to follow at the Garnett Cemetery.
