U.S. Congressman. In 1850, he immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City. He was an alderman of New York City (1864, 66), and Sheriff of New York City, in 1867. He also served in the New York State Senate (1872-73). In 1879, he was elected as an Independent Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress, serving until 1881. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he worked as a stock broker on the New York Stock Exchange until his death.
