H. J. Westerman, retired contractor

Funeral services were Monday morning for Herbert J. Westerman, 96, Hillsboro.

Mr. Westerman died Nov. 13. 2001, at the Silver Coud Retirement Home in Foresst Grove.

Monday's services were at Donelson, Sewell and Matthews Mortuary and a time of gathering followed.

Interment was in Fir Lawn Cemetery.

Mr. Westerman was born May 30, 1905, in Treynor, Iowa., a son of Fred and Minnie Lehmkuhl Westerman. He was raised on the family farm and learned the carpentry trade. He then operated his own contracting business in Wisner, Neb.

In the late 1930s, he moved to Oregon, where he again established a business in constructing custom homes and commercial buldings. The renovation to th Hoyt Hotel in Portland was his final project before retiring in 1971.

On Nov. 28, 1948, he married Leah Turner in Hillsboro. They lived in Hillsboro and were nearing their 53rd wedding anniversary.

Mr. Westerman was an active member of the Hillsboro Christian Church, where he was especially active in congregation building projects.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and working in his garden. He enjoyed music and attending Oregon Symphony performances with his wife. They had participated in a Hillsboro music listening group since the early 1950s,

They also enjoyed traveling and had visited Europe, Australia, the South Pacific, Mexico and took numerous trips throughout Canada and the United States.

His photography skill provided treasured memories of these trips.

Survivors include his wife, Leah Westerman, Hillsboro; three sisters-in-law, Meta Westerman, Wayne, Neb., Phyllis Westerman, Dixon, Neb., and Winona Russell, Hillsboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Hillsboro Christian Church, 540 NE Edison St., Hillsboro, OR 97124, or to the Portland Youth Philharmonic, 1119 SW Park, Portland, OR 97205.
