At about two o'clock in the afternoon, Tuesday February 13, 1866 twelve riders came into Liberty Missouri from varied directions congregating in front of the Clay County Savings Association Bank. Two men entered the bank, while the others stayed mounted outside, and were reportedly nervous. Working in the bank were Greenup Bird, head cashier, and his son and assistant William. One of the two strangers requested a bill to be changed, and this would become their "modus operandi" in future robberies as well. The men left the bank with approximately $60,000 (cash, bonds, and government revenue stamps) in a feed sack. Across the street at the Green Hotel two boys were watching, and as the men were departing shooting occurred. As a result of the shooting, George "Jolly" Wymore (age 17) lay dying in the street. The Wymore family has passed down the story, that within a few weeks they received a letter apologizing for the death of the boy, no one was suppose to be harmed, and it was signed "Jesse James". The robbery caused the bank to close due to insufficient funds. The bank closed, sold all it's assets, called in all loans and paid the depositors $ .60 on the dollar. Today the bank operated as a museum, is owned by Jack Wymore and family, a sixth generation to live in Clay County Missouri. The sister of George Wymore is also buried in this cemetery, and her grave is also unmarked. The marker had been missing for many years when a lady called Jack Wymore and told him she had the marker which had been turned upside down and used to block a door open at her family farm for many years. Upon discovering what it was, she called Jack Wymore and asked if he would like to have it. The marker is now at the museum in Liberty Missouri. Information on the location of the cemetery, which is on private property, was provided by Jack Wymore.
