In 1863 Finess left to fight in the Civil War. He was sent home from the Army with the measles, but being afraid to stay gone too long, he returned to duty before he had actually recovered. He was on guard duty one night and was found dead at his post the next morning. There is a marker near Marshall, Texas where he died and was buried.

He went by Ewing.

He married Jane Williamson in Russellville, Franklin Co., Alabama on Feb. 11, 1849(they eloped).

His parents were George Sherrill and Elizabeth Moore Sherrill.

Finess Ewing Sherrill was my great great grandfather. The information about his death was provided by his granddaughter Frances Lenora Sherrill Westmoreland in the 1960's.

A military headstone application was made for Finess on Sept. 4, 1961 for the stone to be placed in the Corinth Cemetery, Bodcaw, Nevada Co, AR. The applicant was Chester E. Kitchens, MD. The stone was ordered to be made on Dec. 15, 1961, so I assume it is now in place in Corinth Cemetery. The application states that his date of death was May, 1865.
