Sindelar, Sidney "Sid"

Sidney "Sid" Sindelar, 101, of Townsend, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Langlade Hospital, Antigo. He was born on March 6, 1913 in Manitowoc, WI to Charles and Anne (Benes) Sindelar.

Sid married the former Marcella "Marcy" Sleger on June 5, 1935 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kellnersville, WI; she preceded him in death in October of 1994. After graduating from high school, he started working at his uncles' shoe repair shop. Sid took over his uncle's shoe repair business after his retirement. He also worked at the Manitowoc shipyard building submarines during WWII.

Sid and Marcy had a cottage in Townsend for many years and in 1965 built an addition and made it their permanent residence. Shortly after moving to Townsend, he decided to open up Sid's Shoe Shop in Wabeno and later moved the shop to his home to be closer to his wife. Sid also worked for the U.S. Forest Service, as well as running the shoe repair business.

He enjoyed gardening, taking care of his lawn and spending time with his family. Sid also enjoyed traveling. Sid and Marcy traveled the United States and made many trips to California to visit their son. Sid also made many trips to the Czech Republic with his brother, Charlie, to visit family and friends. He was a member of the Wisconsin Czech's. Sid always attended his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's sporting events and musical/theatrical productions no matter how far away they were. He loved reading and his friend, Bob, kept him well supplied with books. Sid had a passion for bowling and bowled into his late 80's.

Sid is survived by his daughter, Patricia Essermann of Townsend, grandchildren, Scott (Virginia) Essermann of Townsend and Cheri (Rolin) Martin-Vah of Pulaski, great-grandchildren, Brad (Brittany Richard) of Morgan City, LA, Becky and Katie Essermann of Townsend and Elizabeth and Jacob Martin of Pulaski, step-great-grandchildren, Matthew and Johnny Hill of Townsend, sister-in-law, Rose Sleger and step-sister Arlene Jerabek

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anne and Charles, wife, Marcy, son, Dr. Ronald Sindelar, sisters, Libby (Charles) Webb and Bessie (Max) Stein, brother, Charles (Janet) Sindelar, son-in-law, Richard Essermann and brothers-in-law, John (Viola) and Jerome Sleger.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 5 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church, Lakewood. Memorial service will follow at 12:00 noon. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc, WI. Weber-Hill Funeral Home is assisting the family. Online condolences at www.weberhillfuneralhome.com.
