Leslie “Les” Jack Marks, of Hermiston died Dec. 14, 2005 at Ashley Manor in Hermiston. He was 89 years old.

Mr. Marks was born in Joseph on Nov. 11, 1916, to Jacob Bluford Marks and Ethel Johnson Marks. He was the oldest of five children.

He was raised on the Imnaha River and walked or rode his horse three miles to school. He graduated from Enterprise High School, where he played football and belonged to the FFA.

He worked for the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management in Wallowa and Harney counties to earn money to attend Oregon State University. He later graduated from the OSU School of Agriculture.

He married Alice Billie Hamilton on May 30, 1942 in Corvallis. He was a member and president of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity and was active in the Ag Club and served as president of the group. He entered the U.S. Army in March of 1943 and served in England and was on his way to the South Pacific when the war ended.

Mr. Marks was appointed Agriculture Agent to Wheeler County and lived in Fossil for 22 years. He was very active in his community. He was president of the PTA, worked with the Wheeler County Fair and with local cattle and sheep producers.

In 1968 Mr. Marks accepted an assignment with the Near East Foundation and spent two years in Cameroon, West Africa, helping start a poultry project.

He returned to the U.S. and purchased Beef City Feedlot in Hermiston, which he operated until 2001 when he semi-retired. He was elected president of the Umatilla County Cattlemen’s Association, was an active member of the Hermiston Rotary Club and past president, a member of the Hermiston Elks Lodge, the Fossil Masonic Lodge, Oregon Cattlemen and the Umatilla and Wheeler County Cattlemen.

He received the Diamond Jubilee award from Oregon State University and he and his wife were Couple of the Year for the Umatilla County Cattlemen’s Association.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Mr. Marks is survived by his wife, Alice, of Hermiston; son David Marks of Hermiston, daughter Margaret Morphet of Australia, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
