The son of Earl Edward Burns and Marie Silvia Schneider, "Stan" served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

Stan married Peggy Ann "Peg" DeSherlia on 10 May 1947. She was born in Calhoun County, Illinois on 09 Mar 1929 and was the daughter of Ross J. DeSherlia and Marie "Blanche" Crawford.

During their 64-year-long marriage, Stan and Peg were the parents of 3 children. He was a machinist, and the family belonged to St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grafton.

He was a lifetime member of the Alton VFW. He also was a member and served as co-commander of the Grafton American Legion for a time. He was a founder of the Grafton Volunteer Emergency Corps.

Stan and his wife owned and operated Peg and Stan's Restaurant in Grafton, Illinois for more than 20 years. They were well known in the community for taking in neighbors during the many floods affecting Grafton. Their generosity also included cooking for those in need of a meal. In their later years, Stan and Peg operated a pecan farm located in nearby Calhoun County, Illinois.

Stan enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing and gardening.

Peg passed away on 07 Nov 2011.

At the time of his death at Blessing Hospital, Stan was 88 years, 4 months and 26 days old. He was survived by 2 sons and 1 daughter-in-law; 1 son-in-law; 5 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Stan was preceded in death by his parents; 1 daughter, Sandra Marie "Sandy" Romano on 07 Feb 2013; and 2 sisters, Helen Prazma and Bertie Taravella.

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. on 16 Apr 2014 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, Illinois. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. the following morning at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grafton. Military rites were performed graveside by the Grafton American Legion Post 648 at Scenic Hill Cemetery.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the St. Patrick's Church Altar Society or to Pan-Can, an organization dedicated to the research and elimination of pancreatic cancer.
