MANSFILED: Donald E. Metz, age 78, of Mansfield passed away peacefully at home following a short illness.

He was the son of Kenneth L. Metz, Sr. and Sophia Horning Metz. A 1953 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School, he remained a lifelong Mansfield resident.

Donald worked for Empire Detroit Steel in Mansfield at the open hearth and electric furnace, and later as a melter and superintendant. He retired in 1986 with over 31 years of dedicated service.

A true man of God, Donald was a member of Maranatha Bible Baptist Church of Shelby. He dedicated his time reading his Bible, and raised his children in a Godly home.

A loving, kind, and giving man, Donald enjoyed golf and bowling. However, no hobby overshadowed the joy and happiness he felt spending time with his family.

Donald is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Patricia Metz and Philip Rhodes of Mt. Vernon, son and daughter-in-law Donald, Jr. and Louri Metz of Lexington, son Kenneth Metz of Ontario; six grandchildren Julie, Michael, Donald, III, Bradley, Ryan and Tyler; a great grandson Michael, two brothers Robert Metz, Sr. of Mansfield and Glen and Judy Metz of North Carolina; two sisters-in-law Shirley Metz and Donna Metz of Mansfield, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Zella Davis Metz, a daughter Mitzi Kay Metz, three brothers Kenneth L. Metz, Jr., Roger "Butch" Metz and Larry Metz; four sisters Geraldine "Jerry" Hunter, Lauretta Taylor, Jeanie Frederick and Charlotte Rachel.

The Metz family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2014 in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where the service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. Long-time family friend William Amore and Pastor Paul Matthewson will officiate and burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.
