Irving was ambitious. After graduating from Manual Training School, in Indianapolis, in 1903, he went to Purdue University and obtained an engineering degree four years later. Following graduation he joined Overland Motor Company in Indianapolis as an assistant engineer and two years later went to work for Remy Electric Company in Anderson, Indiana. On the 24 of February, 1909, in Indianapolis, Irving married Margaret Jeanette Graham. Over the course of the next 17 years, Irving served as chief engineer, factory manager and ended up as general manager of Remy.

While Irving and Janet were living in Anderson they had their only child, Wilma. She was born in 1912 and lived but 11 years, dying of influenza.

After Remy Electric was incorporated into General Motors, in 1918, Irving came to the attention of corporate executives. In 1925 he was appointed General Manager of Olds Motor Company and the couple, saddened by the death of their daughter, moved to Lansing, Michigan.

A year after their move to the Lansing area, Irving became President and General Manager of Olds Motor Company. Here are some of his positions within General Motors:
President and General Manager, Olds Motor Company; 1925-1929

President and General Manager, Oakland Motors; 1930-1931

Managing Director, Opel Motors, Germany; 1930

President and General Manager of Oldsmobile and Buick; 1931-1933

Vice President of General Motors from May 9, 1929 to October 21, 1933.

Irving retired in the last part of 1933. Retirement was a good time for Irving, being only 48 years old. Due to early purchases of GM stock they were financially well off and willing to support a variety of charities. Included in their philanthropies, in which Irving wished to contribute anonymously, were:

Ted Raiford Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Mission Hospital, Asheville, North Carolina.

Wilma Janet Memorial Building at Eliada Home for Children, Asheville, North Carolina.

Largest individual supporter of the recent YMCA building program, Asheville, North Carolina.

The Delta Tau Delta fraternity house at Purdue University.

A library in Anderson, Indiana, in memory of their daughter.

Irving Reuter established the Janirve Foundation in 1954. The name "Janirve" is a neonym derived from the first names of Jeanette and Irving Reuter. Mr. Reuter died at his home in Asheville in 1972 at the age of 87. Much of his estate was transferred to the Janirve Foundation following the death of his wife Jeanette, which occurred in 1984. She was 98. The foundation was to have a limited life, and thus has been the source of a protracted legal wrangle.

One source noted that from 1984 to 2002, the Janirve Foundation distributed $59,863,536 in 1388 grants. Another source reported that: "In 1984, the foundation became involved in grant making, and since that time has issued 1,612 grants totaling $78,897,103. In 2005, there were 78 organizations that received grants in nine different categories that include Arts and Culture, Children and Youth, Community Projects, Education, Environment, Healthcare and Shelter, Social Services, and Miscellaneous. The total amount of funds issued in 2005 equal $5,521,800.

Irving had two residences: 500 Regent Park, Palm Beach, Florida and 418 Vanderbilt Avenue, Asheville, North Carolina.
