Evelyn was a hard worker and because of her warm personality, she was known as "Mom" to everyone she met.

Evelyn Irene Benson was born July 1, 1933 at Newberry, Michigan to Henry and Trinnie (McAlpine) Maki. She attended Pratt School in Newberry and Newberry High School. She married Gordon Benson on April 25, 1950 in Newberry. The couple lived in various places through the years and Evelyn worked hard raising their eight children. While rearing her large family, Evelyn worked for the 3M Company, the Russell Stover Candy Factory, and a nursing home. They settled in the Buffalo Center area in 1990.
Evelyn enjoyed reading, canning and baking. Her children fondly recall her chocolate chip cookies and freshly baked bread. While living in Michigan, she spent many happy hours strolling along the Lake Superior shoreline, searching for Petoskey stones and have occasional picnics.
