My gg grandfather, George Mangum Calhoun Raney, was born on 6 Sep 1830 in Jasper Co., GA to John Raney and Penelope Robinson. He moved to Jones Co., GA in 1839 and then to Claiborne Par. LA in 1849. On 8 Jan 1851, he married Elizabeth Pecaw, the daughter of their neighbors, Jacob Pecaw and Anna Miller. On 13 May 1862, George M. C. enlisted for three years in the Confederate Army at Homer, LA. His enlistment papers indicated that he was 31 years old with blue eyes, auburn hair, dark complexion, and was five feet ten and one half inches tall. Early in 1884, he joined a wagon train, accompanied by his second oldest daughter, Lucinda Cabelle Raney, and her husband, Benjamin Franklin Smith, on a move to Sunset, Montague Co., TX. He died there on 25 Nov 1911 and was survived by five children, Sarah Samantha Raney Wilson, Lucinda Cabelle Raney Smith, Robert Edward Raney, Donald Leon Raney and Laura Leona Raney Robertson and the heirs of three deceased children, Mansel Theodore Raney, Marlan Demetress Raney and Anna Lela Raney Foster.
