Wilhelmina Kumrow's husband had died in Germany in 1872. Wilhelmina and her daughters Marie (13), Ida (9) and Martha (3) immigrated aboard the steamship Thuringa in steerage from Hamburg via Southhampton to New York arriving on Oct 29, 1873 while Wilhelmina was pregnant with Otto, who was born shortly after arriving in America. At first, they lived in Cleveland with Wilhelmina's brother August Budde. Wilhelmina died in 1880, leaving the younger Kumrow children orphans. After their mother's death Ida and Martha lived partially with the Meinke family (doing housekeeping and helping with the Meinke children) and partially with their sister Marie and her husband Richard Ruth. Otto lived with Marie.
Marie Kumrow Ruth outlived all of her children except Hazel Ruth Gable. Richard Frank Ruth spoke English, French and German and was a captain the German army before coming to America. After coming to Cleveland, he worked as a salesman for various beer bottling companies.
