Actress. Eliza made her first appearance in New York on November 15, 1825 appearing as Lady Teazle and Rosins, in the operetta of the same name. The show brought rave reviews remarking on the versatility incorporating opera, comedy and tragedy. It was in tragedy that she excelled, with many of her tragic representations being superb pieces of dramatic intensity and energy. Later her rendition of Emilia, in Shakspeare's tragedy of "Othello" was said at the time, to never have been equaled on the American stage. In 1836 she travelled to Europe for an engagement at Drury Lane Theater where she was to appear as Constance and Lady Macbeth. After many months in Europe, in several different venues she returned to New York. On November 8, 1839 she appeared on stage in New York for the last time appearing once again as Lady Macbeth. It was her last performance as an actress followed by her marriage to Abraham Brevoort. She was considered the preeminent actress of her day.
