Alexander Breckenridge, son of Robert Breckenridge and Mary Poage, was born about 1752 in Virginia.

He was a Captain in the American Revolution, captured by the British and held prisoner aboard ship in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, 1780-1781.

On 9 December 1784 in Jefferson, Virginia (now KY), he married Mrs. Jane "Jenny" (Buchanan) Floyd, widow of Col John Floyd, the explorer, and daughter of Col John Buchanan and Margaret Patton.

Jane's father, Col Buchanan died in 1769 when she was ten years old and William Preston , made her his ward. On 2 November 1778, she married ColonelJohn Floyd, and had three sons: William Preston Floyd, George Rogers Clark Floyd, and John Floyd would become governor of Virginia as would his son, John Buchanan Floyd.

Alexander and Jane had three sons of their own:
1. James Douglas Breckenridge
2. Henry Brown Breckenridge
3. Robert Breckenridge

Note, Alexander had a first cousin, also named Alexander, who was the son of George Breckenridge and Ann Doak and the two are often confused by researchers . The other Alexander Breckenridge, DAR Ancestor Number A013933, was born in 1743 and was married to Magdalene Gamble and Mary Chadd.

Parenthetically, Ann Doak's nephew, Reverend Samuel Doak, DAR Ancestor Number A032617, missed the Battle of King's Mountain. Colonel Sevier had assigned him to lead the men who had been chosen to stay and protect women and children. On September 25, 1780, Reverend Doak offered a prayer to the Over the Mountain Men who were departing Sycamore Shoals, TN, in an expedition against the British. Patrick Ferguson had foolishly issued a threat to these men and Reverend Doak fervently urged them, with words that were to become famous, to "Avenge the slaughter of Thy people. Confound those who plot for our destruction. Crown this mighty effort with victory, and smite those who exalt themselves against liberty and justice and truth. Help us as good soldiers to wield the sword of the Lord and Gideon. Amen."
