A sash and door maker from Mt. Morris, Illinois, he was once called upon to arrange funeral services for a close friend. This was the beginning of a new career for Mr. Newcomer, and the start of a family business as well. About 1893, he opened the D.W. Newcomer Undertaking and Livery. Located at 9th & Brooklyn in Kansas City, Missouri. David W. Newcomer, Jr. purchased land at 46th & Paseo in the early 1920's. Construction of the funeral home began in 1925 with a second phase in 1936. Today, the funeral home building at Brush Creek & Paseo is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Washington, D.C. The funeral home at Brush Creek and & Paseo became company offices, after closing in April 1986. D.W. Newcomer's Sons now owns and manages 15 funeral homes, 11 cemeteries, and a prearrangement company, operating in the Kansas City metro area.
