Barnes drill company founder John E. Andress, Industrialist, Dies

John E. Andress, pioneer Rockford industrialist and one of the founders of the Barnes Drill company here, died at 7:30 AM today at his home at 2617 Country Club Terrace. He was 79.

A director of the local concern here until the sale of his stock interest in the Barnes company last January 1, Andress had been ill only a short time. Graveside services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in Aledo.

A native of Aledo, Andress went to Chicago in 1898 where he was employed by the Norton Emery Wheel company until 1902, when he came to Rockford to work for the B.F. Barnes Co. as acting secretary to Benjamin F. Barnes.

In 1907, Andress and Barnes organized the present Barnes Drill Co. on Chestnut Street. Andress served initially as secretary of the company and later as president and chairman of the board until his retirement eight years ago. Andresss was the son of Byrum and Susan Jane Morris Andress and was born in Aledo April 5, 1876. He attended schools in Toledo, Dixon, and Chicago before joining the Norton Co. He was married to the former Ina May Reed of Toledo on June 17, 1903.

His survivors include his widow, a daughter, Lynore E. Bard, and a son, Reed M. Andress, who was formerly president and general manager of the Barnes firm. Andress was an active member of the Court St., Methodist Church, the Elks, the Kiwanis club, Masonic Temple, and the Rockford Chamber of Commerce.

The men of vision who saw the immense possibilities of machine tools a half-century ago played a leading role in the growth of American industry. John Andress was one of those men.
