Virgil Gardner passed away on May 24, 2005 at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland. Born June 11, 1924 in Cheyenne, Wyo., Virgil was one of five brothers.

He grew up in Nebraska and Oregon, graduating from Grant's Pass High School in 1946. He spent most of his life in Edmonds, raising three daughters with his wife, Betty, who preceded him in death in 2002, shortly after their 50th anniversary.

As a young man, Virgil competed as an amateur boxer and served in the Navy on the USS Baldwin during WWII. From July 1951 to June 1986, he worked as a press operator for the Seattle Times.

Following his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and was known for keeping a tidy house, inside and out. He was fond of backyard wildlife, especially raccoons and hummingbirds.

Virgil will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather and as a devoted husband. He was a kind and caring person, a soft-spoken man with a warm smile and a full head of lustrous hair that was the envy of his peers.

Virgil leaves his daughters, Sandra Lee Garland and husband Drew, Paula Laughtland and husband Brian, and Carol Cox and husband Vic; six grandchildren, Richard Morgan, Mandy and Charlie Laughtland, Victor, David, and Montana Cox; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Richie, and Kelsi Morgan, and Paige and Ethan Cox. Virgil also leaves his brother, Leonard Gardner, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Brent Lee Morgan.

Remembrances can be made to Evergreen Hospice (12822 124th Lane NE, Kirkland, WA 98034) and the American Cancer Society (1-800-227-2345). Graveside Services will be held at noon on Saturday, June 11 at Restlawn Memorial Park (23800 104th Ave. W., Edmonds) to be followed by a gathering at 21900 95th Ave. W., Edmonds.
