Arthur Desire DeBacker, 86, Topeka, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at a Topeka retirement community.

Mr. DeBacker had been a farmer and worked for Santa Fe Railroad before and after World War II. He was a pipefitter for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., where he retired after 27 years.

Mr. DeBacker was born May 11, 1916, in Topeka, the son of Arthur A. and Rosalia A. Csitkovits DeBacker.

He graduated from Topeka Catholic High School in 1934 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mr. DeBacker was a member of URW Local No. 307 and the Goodyear Retirement Club. He was a former member of Knights of Columbus No. 2608. He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Church for 50 years.

He married JoAnn M. Schoenfeldt on Nov. 25, 1941. She died Jan. 17, 2000.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur D DeBacker Jr, Topeka and Michael L. DeBacker, Toledo, Ohio; two daughters, Jane F. McIntyre, Placitas, N.M.; and Dona S. Nordstrom, Topeka; a brother, Albert H. DeBacker, Topeka; two sisters, Teresa I. DeBacker and Esther D. Coe, both of Topeka; eleven grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. DeBacker will lie in state from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Most Pure Heart of Mary Church Building Fund, 3601 S.W. 17th, Topeka, 66604.
