Lifelong Harborite John R. Maki died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at Montesano Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was 84. He had been a commercial fisherman. Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct.31, in the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen.

John Reino Maki, 84, a lifetime resident of
Aberdeen, died at Montesano Health and
Rehabilitation, Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008.
He was born in Aberdeen, April 17, 1924,
the son of Oscar F. and Olga (Hoem)
Maki. He graduated from Aberdeen
Weatherwax High School in 1942, and
then served in the U.S. Navy in the
Pacific during World War Two. Following
the war, He began a career as a
commercial fisherman and crabber along
the Washington coast and in Alaska. He
retired in 1986. On Aug. 9, 1952, he
married Dolores F. Kistler, in Olympia
and she survived at the family home
in Aberdeen.
John was a life member of the Finnish
Kaleva Brothers and Sisters, Lodge No.
9 of Aberdeen and the Aberdeen
Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also
belonged to the Finnish Lutheran
Church and then Bethany Lutheran
Church of Aberdeen. More recently
he had been a member of Trinity
Lutheran Church. He liked to visit
his neighborhood friends, riding on
his electric chair. He also fussed over
his several cats.
Besides his wife of 56 years, Dolores
"Lori"; John is survived by a son,
and daughter-in-law, John and Lori
Maki of Aberdeen; two grand-
children, Tiffany Maki of Aberdeen
and Heather Maki and her fiancé,
Jamie Robarge of Olympia.
Three brothers, Paul, Oscar and
Henry Maki; and a sister, Gertrude
Martinez all dead before him.
Visitation will be held at Fern Hill
Funeral Home, Friday, Oct. 31, 2008,
from 1 to 8 p.m. A funeral service
will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov.
1, 2008, at the funeral home. Chaplain
David Monsen of Grays Harbor
Community Hospital will officiate and
Officers of UFKB&S will give lodge
funeral rites. Burial will follow in Fern
Hill Cemetery where military honors
will be presented by the Grays Harbor
All Services Honor Guard.
