"Black, Anna "Maria" Hansen, wife of William Morley Black, was born Nov. 19, 1840, in Egtved, Veile, Denmark, the daughter of Anders Hansen and Ablone Knudsen. The Hansens were Methodist in Denmark. Becoming a convert to "Mormonism" she was baptized when quite young and emigrated at age 15 from her native land in 1855, crossing the Atlantic Ocean. She crossed the plains in Canute Peterson's company during 1856. She and her Family settled in Manti, Sanpete County, Utah. Maria at age 19 married William Morley Black on Oct. 26, 1859, and has resided successively at Manti, Nephi, Ephraim, Circleville, Beaver, Washington, Glendale, Orderville, and Huntington, in Utah, Pacheco, in Old Mexico, and at Fruitland, in New Mexico, and at Blanding, Utah. She was a tailoress and one of the few that owned a sewing machine. She sewed for her neighbors and herself. Maria also gave compassionate service in the Relief Sociey to the sick, those in need and the dying. Maria was a midwife and would set broken bones in emergencies. Maria also gathered herbs and studied herbs. Maria made quilts, rugs and burial clothes. She kept a garden. Maria while residing in Sanpete county witnessed the terrors of the Black Hawk war, her husbands' brother and brother-in-law being killed by Indians. In Circle valley the family was robbed of their all and driven from their homes. Again, when her husband was 86 years of age, the family was driven from Old Mexico, losing their home and everything they possessed. William and Maria later moved to (Grayson), now Blanding, Utah. Sister Black is a woman of great faith, having witnessed many instantaneous healings by the prayer of faith. She was a plural wife for forty years and rejoiced in that order of marriage, glorifying the name of the Lord for that grand principle which gave her a loving husband and a family of virtuous, noble children." She died on March 9, 1920 at Blanding, Utah and was buried at Blanding Cemetery, San Juan County, Utah.
