Widely regarded as Indianapolis' foremost civil rights leader, Reverend Brown pastored the St. John's Missionary Baptist Church for many years before passing the torch in September 1990. He helped found the Indiana Black Expo, started Operation Breadbasket and was a good friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. In his honor, the street on which St. John's is located was renamed Dr. Andrew J. Brown Avenue in 1986. He is pictured below with Reverend Jackson and Indianapolis' Bishop T. Garrott Benjamin at the Indiana Black Expo Ecumenical Service on July 17, 1991, at which time he was awarded the PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) Excellence Award. Prior to returning to the spiritual realm, Dr. Brown characterized himself as a "tired old warrior."
