Winfield Scott Downs, born 5 May 1895 at Newark, New Jersey the son of John Phillip Downs and Adelaide Watson Albertson Downs, was an allied member of John and Betty More's Edward line. He was raised at Newark where his father was a rubber salesman. The family relocated to Haddonfield, New Jersey about 1905 where his father was associated with Lewis Historical Publishing Company at New York City and was biographical editor of Americana, the quarterly publication of American Historical Society. Winfield enlisted in the United States Army in June 1917 and was active duty effective November 1917. He served overseas from January 1918 to February 1919 and, upon returning to the United States, he was honorably discharge from service. He returned to the family home at Haddonfield and was a salesman with Holmes Press based at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. About 1920, the family relocated to Manhattan, New York where his father was an institutional writer and where Winfield was a clerk. Winfield was the managing editor for Lewis Historical Publishing Company at New York City when he married to Esther Alley on 8 October 1927 at Cortland, New York. They made their home first at East Orange, New Jersey and relocated to Glen Rock, New Jersey about 1930 and to Ridgewood, New Jersey about 1940. Winfield died on 1 October 1982 at Jacksonville, Florida.
