HAWARDEN, IOWA- ARLENE HORTON, 88, of Hawarden, Iowa died Saturday, August 16, 2008 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Rev. Tim Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Monday, with the family present from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. The family prefers memorials to the United Methodist Church or Hospice of Siouxland.
Arlene Horton was born May 4, 1920 on a farm near Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Alma (Borchers) Plueger. Arlene married Clarence "Red" Horton on October 10, 1940 at Akron. They farmed until 1954 when they moved to Centerville, South Dakota where Clarence and his brother Art operated the John Deere Implement for 3 years. They moved back to Hawarden and farmed southeast of town until moving into town in the fall of 1974.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hawarden. Arlene was an avid quilter making several quilts and sharing them with her family and friends. She preferred making the scrappy, multi-colored quilts and was always looking for a new pattern to try. She also enjoyed mowing her own lawn, which she moved until early July before going to the hospital. She also enjoyed baking and trying new recipes.
Survivors include seven children, Shirley Nelson of Akron, Patty Torgerson of Phoenix, Arizona, Rich and Paula Horton of Hurley, South Dakota, Rose and Tom Gereau of Janesville, Wisconsin, Karel and Verlyn Dekkers of Hawarden, Mary Horton of Sioux City, Iowa and Robert and Tammy Horton of Hawarden; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 4 step great-grandchildren; a sister, Fern Horton of Pipestone, Minnesota; brothers-in-law, Wayne Horton and his wife Betty of LeMars, Iowa, Glenn Horton of Sioux City, and Cecil Horton and his wife Corriene of Akron; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Oloff and her husband Emeral of Bettendorf, Iowa; along with several nieces and nephews.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence; great-grandson, Evan; brother, Darrell Plueger and his wife Darlene; and a brother-in-law, Art Horton.
