Ivanelle Frances Schlake, 92, of Farmersburg, Iowa died Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa. She was born December 28, 1921 to Arno and Emma (Theodore) Stickfort in rural Garnavillo, Iowa. Ivanelle was baptized in 1922 and confirmed in 1925 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, Iowa. She attended country school through the eighth grade, graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1939 and received her Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of Dubuque. She later attended Upper Iowa University to renew her teaching certificates. Teaching in a one room school house was the beginning of her teaching career.

Ivanelle was united in marriage with Verdis Verlyn Schlake on August 20, 1947 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, Iowa. Three sons were born to this union, Verdean, Wayne and Paul. Ivanelle and her family farmed near Farmersburg where Ivanelle was still managing the farming business until recently which included crops, dairy, hogs and books. She also taught at MFL-Monona for twenty-six years, retiring in 1976. Ivanelle was named Clayton County Farm Bureau Woman of the Year. She helped out with Farm Bureau over the years including county chairman for the woman's committee for 1983-1984.

She served on the Farmersburg Public Library Board, the Delta Kappa Gamma-Beta Alpha Chapter since 1976, American Auxiliary Chapter 388 of St. Olaf, the Care Review Board for the Great River Nursing Home, the Gooding Better Neighbor Club since 1955, the Friendly Neighbor Club, the Farmersburg Study Club and various card clubs.

Ivanelle was an inspiration and a wonderful role model, her tremendous energy, her love and affection for others, her motivation to improve community, her desire for continuous education, her appreciation of the farming life and her strong moral values, which she exercised daily in her activities and unto others.

Ivanelle is survived by her three sons, Verdean (Susie) Schlake of Luana, Wayne Schlake of St. Olaf and Paul (Lisa) Schlake of Farmersburg; six grandchildren, Zachary Schlake, Crystal (Jason) Oyle, Benjamin (Danielle) Schlake, Kathryn Schlake, Alison Schlake and Spencer Schlake; three great-grandchildren, Odessa, Luke and Owen; a sister, Christina (Virgil) Niehaus of Guttenberg and a sister-in-law, Betty Stickfort of Garnavillo. Ivanelle was preceded in death by her husband, Verdis in 1996; her parents; her brother, Earl Stickfort and four sisters, Fern (Alvin) Terveen, Leona (Stanley) Schroeder, Lena (Arlyn) Hempeler and Irma (Verni)Blume.

Visitation will be Friday, April 11, 2014 from 4-8 pm at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa with a one hour visitation before services at the church on Saturday. Funeral Services will be at 11 am on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, Iowa with Rev. Wayne Ellingson as the Officiant. Burial will follow at the Garnavillo City Cemetery, Garnavillo, Iowa.
