Robert Arnold Killed in Car Crash Saturday

Tragic Accident Near Anamosa Claims Two Lives


Robert Arnold, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Arnold, of Cedar Rapids, was instantly killed in a car crash a few miles west of Anamosa on Saturday, December 13, on Highway 151, when he and Clifford Close, and Ralph Hanson of Marion were returning to Cedar Rapids, Ralph Hanson, 29, died in Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids shortly after the accident, Clifford Close was taken to the Anamosa hospital and his condition is said to be not serious.


Robert Eugene Arnold, 25, was born in Manchester on February 1, 1922, and attended the schools in Manchester, graduating from the local high school with the class of 1941. In the fall of l941 Robert enlisted in the coast artillery of the United Sates army, and was sent to the Alcutian Islands, where he served for 25 months. He received his discharge from the service early in October, 1945. For some time he has been employed by the Green Engineering Company of Cedar Rapids, as a surveyor.


He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Arnold, of Cedar Rapids, one brother, Garth D. Arnold, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Alberta Arnold, of Cedar Rapids; by his grandparents, a number of uncles and aunt, and cousins and other relatives.


Funeral services are being held this (Tuesday) afternoon at the Shelly funeral home, with the Rev. David Davids, pastor of the Community Congregational church, in charge. Burial is being made in Oakland cemetery.


During the family residence here, Robert was affiliated with the Community church, and the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign wars. He was a young man of good habits, and gave four years of his best efforts in the service of his county during World war !!. His tragic death has brought a great sorrow to his parents and brother. A large circle of friends extend their sincere sympathy to the stricken family in their sorrow.
